A/W 2003 saw many reissues of classic Helmut Lang outerwear from the late 1990s, including this design which dates back to A/W 1998-1999. This collection is seen as one of Lang's seminal collections, showcasing the first major exploration of the abstract and layered streetwear that became synonymous with his late 90s output. The main source of inspiration was contemporary military uniforms, which had been a recurrent theme in Lang's menswear since the decade's beginnings. Dramatic down-filled coats were some of the collection's most coveted designs, and are still extremely sought-after by collectors.

Like the 1998 designs that inspired it, this jacket has a slightly exaggerated silhouette thanks to its thick down-filled construction and subtly aggressive funnel neck. At the same time its proportions have been modified for a cleaner look with narrow shoulders, elongated sleeves and a boxy waist-length body. The fabric is a densely woven extra fine nylon with a gorgeous matte finish. The jacket's shell is constructed without the stitched panels typically seen in padded jackets, resulting in a cleaner surface with faint horizontal lines.

The jacket's streamlined details complement its minimalist design, while highlighting its impeccable construction. The zipper and snap button closure is concealed like Lang's classic outerwear, while the waistline and cuffs are finished without ribbed trim for a seamless finish. The zipper is a luxurious all-metal Riri, and all hardware has a polished silver finish. The padding used is pure goose down, which achieves excellent insulation while being extremely light. The interior is beautifully finished (essentially making the piece reversible) and features Lang's signature rectangular patch pocket on the chest. 

Combining everyday practicality with a Lang's minimalist sophistication, this is a very versatile piece that you will reach for again and again.
